We are looking for a full-time NYS certified teacher to run a small computer lab in a mental health clinic and school in East Harlem. This would involve:
1.setting up software and supervising the lab for small classes of special ed. children, ages 4 to 8, in the mornings;
2.supervising the lab as a math, reading, and research center during our after-school program for children ages 6 to 12;
3.being familiar with educational internet sites and software;
4.tutoring students in reading or math;
5.being an on-site go-to person for therapeutic staff to help research various problems for their clients.
This job is for you if:
•you are a computer, reading, or math specialist with special ed experience;
•you have experience with and see the value of using computers with children (educational software, writing, excel, drawing, robotics, internet, etc.)
•you know how to install programs, get them to run, and do minor troubleshooting (you don't have to be a network administrator, but the more computer knowledge, the better);
•you have experience teaching elementary math and/or reading, and are good at breaking down learning tasks into clear, easy, steps;
•you have patience, a good sense of humor, and an ability to connect with children with emotional or learning problems.

PART-TIME POSITIONS FOR
EXPERIENCED READING & MATH SPECIALISTS
Northside Center for Child Development, a mental health clinic in East Harlem, is seeking experienced Reading and Math Specialists to tutor children from ages 6 to 16. We have part-time positions, which may include afternoons during the school year, and/or Saturdays. We have one position working two mornings a week with 6 to 8 year olds. Work will entail individual tutoring of children twice a week, as well as advocating for academic change, if necessary, by working with parents, therapists, and schools. (Please notice that this job requires a Master’s degree as a learning specialist.)
Applicants should know how to reach children who may have emotional as well as learning problems. They must be able to diagnose the problems that are holding children back and engage them in activities that will give them success and make them feel competent. We need people who can teach phonemic awareness and word attack skills (Orton-Gillingham training a plus), and who also know the perfect books to pique a child’s interest.
We are also looking for math specialists, who can diagnose and engage children with math phobias and disabilities. If you are comfortable with both reading and math, so much the better.
We work at two main locations: Northside’s flagship site at 110th St and Madison Avenue, and Central Harlem Services, at 135th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. Both sites are convenient to subway and bus lines.

FULL-TIME POSITIONS FOR EXPERIENCED COUNSELORS
Northside Center for Child Development, a mental health clinic in East Harlem, is seeking experienced Counselors for Summer Camp 2008. We are looking for professional Counselors with a background in Education, Human Services and/or Psychology, who have had several years of experience working with children from 6 to 12 years old. Please note that this job requires applicants to have at least two years of college coursework completed.
Applicants must be able to engage campers in various activities. They will provide child care, recreational and educational services to school-age children, some with severe emotional and behavioral difficulties, and be responsible for the following:
- Supervise children in groups and individually
- Work with children in a wide range of recreational and educational activities that are part of the program (i.e., homework assistance, tutoring, sports, table games, computer room activities, karate, etc.)
- Escort children to various activity locations within the program
- Pick up children from nearby schools, as needed
- Help children to cope with daily social interaction
- Help children to learn appropriate social behaviors
- Mediate conflicts presented by children
- Maintain daily attendance
- Dismiss children from the program, ensuring they leave with requested caregivers
- Assist in serving meals to the program participants
The Summer Camp is located at 110th St and Madison Avenue, which is convenient to subway and bus lines.

Immediate opening for After-school/Summer Program Coordinator
In mental health/multi-service agency in Harlem for children 6 to 12 years old. Job requires teacher or clinician experienced with special needs children, and experienced with running an OST program or other after-school or summer camp, providing recreational and educational activities. Person must be able to supervise and hire program staff, monitor and report attendance, write and monitor various budgets, be sure that reports to government agencies are made on time, monitor food provider, and provide for staff training, among other responsibilities.
