Northside Center for Child Development Appoints Paula Magnus as President

Northside Center for Child Development is pleased to announce the appointment of Paula Magnus, M.S., as the organization’s new President, marking a planned and seamless leadership succession following the retirement of Dr. Thelma Dye-Holmes, who served Northside for 37 years.

Founded in 1946 by pioneering psychologists Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark, Northside Center has long been recognized as a national leader in child mental health, early childhood education, and family support. From its earliest days in Harlem, Northside played a historic role in providing mental-health services and family supports to children and families who were excluded from traditional systems of care and lacked access to the resources needed to overcome widespread systemic and generational barriers.

Magnus has been a central member of Northside’s executive leadership team for more than three decades. Having joined the organization’s managerial team in 1995, she worked in direct partnership with Dr. Dye during a period of sustained programmatic growth, strengthened financial infrastructure, and expanded services across New York City. Her appointment reflects a long-standing succession plan grounded in shared stewardship and deep institutional knowledge.

“Paula has been at the heart of Northside’s evolution for more than 30 years,” said Steven Scheinfeld, Chair of Northside Center’s Board of Directors. “Her leadership is deeply rooted in Northside’s mission, culture, and values. As someone who helped build Northside’s modern financial and operational infrastructure alongside Dr. Dye, she is uniquely prepared to guide the organization into its next era with stability and vision. The Board has full confidence in her leadership and in Northside’s continued strength.”

A Proven Leader with Deep Institutional Experience
Magnus joined Northside as Controller in 1995 and steadily assumed increasing leadership responsibilities over financial operations, human resources, data systems, compliance, and organizational strategy. As Chief Financial Officer, she led the organization’s long-term financial planning, revenue management, and fiscal oversight. Most recently, as Chief Revenue Officer and Deputy Director, she expanded her leadership portfolio to guide agency-wide operations and strategic initiatives.

Throughout her tenure, Magnus has:
  • Directed the administration and supervision of all financial and human resources functions
  • Expanded the agency’s data-processing and analytic capabilities
  • Designed and implemented comprehensive controls for cash-flow management and investments
  • Provided ongoing financial analysis and strategic forecasting for the executive team and Board of Directors
  • Strengthened the organization’s fiscal foundation to support program growth and sustainability
  • Built and maintained essential relationships with city and state partners to secure and sustain public funding
She holds a Master of Science in Accounting from Armstrong College in Berkeley, California, and a Bachelor of Arts from Memphis State University.

A Seamless Leadership Transition Rooted in Shared Legacy
For more than 30 years, Magnus and Dr. Dye worked side-by-side stewarding the mission first established by Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark, ensuring that Northside remained a leader in culturally responsive, whole-child and whole-family care. “I am deeply honored to serve as Northside’s next President,” said Magnus. “Northside’s mission has guided my work for more than three decades. I look forward to building on our strong foundation, supporting our exceptional staff, and continuing to serve children and families with excellence, compassion, and integrity.” With a strengthened executive team and enduring Board leadership, Northside Center for Child Development remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing equitable access to high-quality mental health, early childhood education, and family support services throughout New York City.

For nearly 80 years, Northside has served as a cornerstone of equity, mental health access, and opportunity for thousands of New York City children each year.

Northside's Karleen Marcone Awarded for Excellence in Teaching

We’re proud that Northside’s own Karleen Marcone was recently honored with the 2025 Julian Robertson Award for Excellence in Teaching.

With 30 years of experience in early childhood and special education, Karleen brings creativity and intention to her work at Northside. Her teaching is grounded in the belief that meaningful learning happens through connection—using story, music, and the creative arts to help young learners engage with the world, express their feelings, and build understanding.

In addition to her classroom practice, Karleen serves as a curriculum coordinator, mentoring teachers and leading professional development across the school community. She sees this work as a responsibility and an opportunity to support and sustain excellence in early childhood education. Looking ahead, Karleen is focused on deepening her impact by nurturing future educators and advocating for the systems that allow early childhood education to thrive across New York City.

Honoring Juneteenth!

We’re grateful for the communities we serve.

Today, we celebrate freedom and remember the pivotal ways African Americans have shaped our country through resilience, intelligence, and initiative.

We are remembering our founders, especially – Drs. Mamie and Kenneth Clark. 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, which legally ended segregation in public schools. Our founders’ groundbreaking Black/White Doll Test was the first-ever social science research to be submitted as hard evidence in the Supreme Court’s history, and was critical to the ruling in this landmark case. The Clarks thought differently. They opened doors. They helped change America.

As an organization, we strive to live up to their example. We are driven by our shared humanity and focus on the strength of families and the importance of children’s self-esteem. Thank you for being a meaningful part of our journey.

Dr. Thelma Dye Honored as Health Hero

On February 18, Empire BlueCross Blue Shield honored 50 Whole Health Heroes who have fought against the unseen enemy of COVID-19. These New Yorkers who hail from the health care sector, the business world, and the nonprofit field have displayed extraordinary leadership, dedication, empathy, and remarkable compassion to help ensure all New Yorkers’ safety and wellness during this crisis.Northside’s Executive Director and CEO, Dr. Thelma Dye, was honored with 49 other heroes. Dr. Dye was appointed as Executive Director in 1994 following an impressive tenure at Northside, where she served as Director of the Clinic, Director of Research and Training, and Chief Psychologist. Dr. Dye has more than 20 years of experience as a psychologist, clinician, researcher, supervisor, and administrator. Since the beginning of March 2020, Dr. Dye has led Northside in these challenging times, helping us shifts our mental health and educational services to remote and hybrid models. Each year, 4,000 children come to Northside Center for Child Development for behavioral health, early childhood education, and enrichment support at its four locations in the Bronx, Harlem, and Brooklyn and through our partner sites citywide. Dr. Thelma Dye has viewed our mission as more urgent than ever during the Covid-19 pandemic because African American and Latino children and families have been disproportionately affected by the physical, mental and social determinants of health. Under Dr. Thelma Dye’s leadership, Northside established tele-mental health services and worked with early childhood education families to support home learning. Northside is working with families to ensure access to food and other emergency support.

Remembering Susan Patricof

It is with profound sorrow that Northside Center announces that our long-time Board Chair, President and Board Member, Mrs. Susan Patricof passed away on January 18th, following a long illness. Mrs. Patricof passed away peacefully, in her home, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Patricof’s dedication, generosity, and love for Northside and the children we serve, was unmatched and will be missed terribly. For over 40 years, Mrs. Patricof led Northside in a variety of roles – having been Board Chair for well over 15 years, Board President and chair of the Board Gala Committee. She was deeply involved in every aspect of Northside, continuing to visit all of the programs as much as she could, even as her health declined. Indeed, Mrs. Patricof’s involvement and impact on Northside has been great and serves as an inspiration to us all as we honor her memory.

In recognition of the many years of dedication and support we proudly named Northside’s East Harlem, Early Head Start/Head Start Program after her “The Susan Patricof Head Start Center (SPHS.)” The kindness, warmth and love Mrs. Patricof exuded will be missed, so very much and will live in Northside’s ongoing work with children and families, which was one of her greatest passions in life. I know you join with me in extending our deepest condolences to the Patricof family.

Remembering Mayor Dinkins

Northside Center mourns the recent loss of Mayor David Dinkins, the 106th Mayor of New York City and the first and only African-American to hold this office. Mayor Dinkins and his wife Joyce (who passed away in October of this year,) were long-time supporters of Northside Center for Child Development. He especially loved reading to our children during the holidays. We are proud to have had the privilege of honoring Mayor Dickins for our 66th Annual Gala in 2012, celebrating his many contributions to New York City. He was an inspiration to the entire Northside family, and to so many across New York City and beyond.
