A movement that changed America, started in East Harlem.
Today, Northside provides comprehensive mental health, early childhood education, and enrichment services to more than 5,500 children and families across Harlem, the Bronx, and Brooklyn.
We meet children where they are — in our centers, their schools, their homes — with the same philosophy the Clarks established: unlock the inherent strengths of children and families and help them overcome challenges and flourish.
In 1946, two psychologists saw a problem no one else would fix.
Harlem's children desperately needed support. Social service agencies were turning away families. Dr. Kenneth B. Clark, an assistant professor at City College, and Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark, a psychological consultant, approached every agency they could find. None would help.
With a $940 loan from Mamie's father, they opened the Northside Testing and Consultation Center in a basement apartment at the Dunbar Houses on 158th Street.
